Overview

When I moved to South Africa, it became apparent that simple models of culture, such as those espoused by Hofstede and Edwards would not be much use in creating interfaces for different culture groups. Even 'obvious' solutions such as translating the interface language fall down because the visual conventions get in the way: e.g structuring information in a hierarch is problematic for some cultures. Fortunately I met Marion Walton shortly after starting at UCT who was able to give me some insight into these problems of literacy.
