Other Research-Based Contributions

Together with Dr Henk Goosen, Dr Nicolas Holzschuch and Prof Peter Wood we have developed an new scientific visualization course where students read current research papers and then solve pressing visualization problems arising in the work of researchers in other departments (e.g., CERECAM, Surveying, Astronomy) (a number of these courses can be found on our World Wide Web pages, the home page is http://www.cs.uct.ac.za.

Contemporary African Music and Arts Archive

We have assisted significantly in the development of the Contemporary African Music and Arts Archive (CAMA). We are currently hosting the unit and the multimedia development has been done over a period of two years by our third year and honours students. This project was presented to cabinet and the provincial leaders as the key project of the Department of Arts Culture Science and Technology: its significance lies in combining traditional and contemporary African culture with advanced information technology for archiving and distribution. It enjoys the personal support of the minister, Dr Ngubane. It was one of the 5 pilot projects proposed by South Africa at the Information Society and Development Conference.
