Current position(s)

I am a full professor in the Department of Computer Science at the University of Cape Town and head of the national Centre for Artificial Intelligence Research (CAIR)

I am an NRF B-rated (Internationally Acclaimed) researcher.

Before joining the University of Cape Town I was Director of the UKZN/CSIR Meraka Centre for Artificial Intelligence Research (CAIR), Chief Researcher at the CSIR Meraka Institute, Honorary Professor in the School of Mathematics, Statistics, and Computer Science at the University of KwaZulu-Natal, and Research Group Leader of the Knowledge Representation and Reasoning group (KRR). Prior to joining the CSIR I was a senior researcher in the Knowledge Representation and Reasoning program (KRR) of NICTA, a conjoint associate professor in the School of Computer Science and Engineering at the University of New South Wales, an associate professor in Computer Science at the University of Pretoria, a research fellow at the University of Wollongong, and a senior lecturer at the University of South Africa. I received my PhD in Computer Science from the University of South Africa in 1999.
