Background/Personal Info

I was born in 1983, in the capital of Kampala, Uganda, a country located in East Africa. It is approximately five and half hour flight from Entebbe to Cape Town, South Africa and the same flight duration to Alexandria, Egypt. Uganda--known as the Pearl of Africa is naturally gifted, not only by resources, but also with brainy and hospitable people.

Life growing up as a young child with a dream of becoming a professional scientist, was marred by numerous challenges. Needless to say, attending school as a poor child was another nightmare on its own. However, coming from a poor family was never a reason to remain and experience poverty. I realised from an early age that quality education was the only remedy to redeem me from my circumstances. Therefore, I attended good schools, based on merit and not favor.

In 2007, I qualified as a Statistician from Makerere University, a University known to many as and icon centre of excellence, not only in Uganda but also beyond. I further specialized in Statistical Computing, which equipped me with the necessary skills to accurately manage and account for the ever growing data, particularly considering that it is Africa's biggest need.

In 2013, I was awarded a M.Sc in Data Communication and Software Engineering (M.Sc. DCSE) from the same university. My focus was on communication networks, particularly slow speeds in Africa, which eventually became a valued project sponsored by Google, under the supervision of Prof Idris A Rai. During this Project I worked as an assistant investigator, and got first-hand mentoring from renowned researcher and scholar, Prof. Rai, who also inspired me to build a career in academia/scientific Research.

Between 2011 and 2014, I partly got involved in a business and leadership programme with a mission to grow young entrepreneurs and leaders of tomorrow. This Programme chiselled me into a true leader with a polished business acumen. In addition to this programme, I traveled extensively to learn from diverse people with different cultures, races and languages.

In December 2015, I moved to South Africa. This move was both politically and academically motivated - especially at a time when my country demostrated discomforting scenes of political oppression. Therefore, I decided to settle in Cape Town, given the country's good reputation towards professionals.

I am currently registered as a PhD student in Computer Science at the University of Cape Town (UCT). UCT is known as the leading university in Africa and one of the highest ranked Universities in World's Rankings.

My research is purely on developing Computational Solutions for the Square Array Kilometer (SKA) inherent Radio Frequency Interference (RFI) problem, under the supervision of Associate Professor Michelle Kuttel. SKA is a multi-billion Euro Telescope project to be constructed between South Africa and Australia - estimated to be completed in 2024. It is said once completed, it will be in position to contribute about 1% of the total digital universe (estimated at 44 zetta bytes) on a daily basis. In this research I will also explore the big data era.

In conclusion, i am a proud father of 5 year old Mubiru Raphael, who is my daily inspiration and reason to smile, smile and smile ☺☺☺
