Abstract:

The G7 Information Society and Development Conference (ISAD) took place in May 1996. This paper is a somewhat irreverent look at the conference and its impact. It is also a very personal view. The only scholarly part of this paper are the World Wide Web references provided at the end and serious readers and politicians are advised to skip to them straight away.

ISAD was more a historic confluence of people rather than a meeting of minds. The division being that the interests of the developing world lie in development and the interests of the developed world lie in marketing. As far as South Africa is concerned the follow-up to ISAD has been a lot less impressive than the lead-in.
