What if you could

move characters by hand

What if you could

be in the scene

What if you could

make previz yourself

The same complex packages used to produce final animation are used to make previz. Could alternate interfaces allow non-animators to effectively produce low-fidelity animation? Our experiment presents casual users with a storyboard that they must recreate using one of two systems...

Tangible tabletop

Manipulate the scene with your hands

Tangible systems are an uncommon but well-established in interface research (see Ishii 2008 ). The tabletop system makes use of 3D-printed character models on a real tabletop. Participants must physically arrange the characters for each shot.

Virtual reality

Manipulate the scene from within

While virtual reality applications are not new, it has never been applied to the process of previsualization. The virtual reality system makes use of an Oculus Rift DK2 head-mounted display. Participants must manipulate the characters using a gamepad for each shot.
